George London Foundation announces its 2001 Awards

The George London Foundation awarded its annual prizes to promising opera singers March 29, 2001, after the finalists concert held at the Morgan Library in New York

The winners were:

George London Awards winners ($7,500 each) :

PATRICK CARFIZZI, bass-baritone - George London Award
MELISSA CITRO, soprano - George London Award
JÉSUS GARCIA, tenor - George London Award
ROBERT POMAKOV, bass - George London Award
JENNIFER CHECK, soprano - George London/Leonie Rysanek Award
MEASHA BRÜGGERGOSMAN, soprano - George London/Kirsten Flagstad Memorial Award, sponsored by the New York Community Trust

Encourangement Grant winners: ($1,000 each)

BRAD ALEXANDER, baritone
MICHELE CAPALBO, soprano - Canadian grant for Lucy Purdy Posik
BRYAN HYMEL, tenor
LATONIA MOORE, soprano - Robert Jacobson Memorial Grant
JENNIFER RIVERA, mezzo-soprano
N'KENGE SIMPSON-HOFFMAN, soprano

Pomakov, Brüggergosman, and Capalbo are Canadians.

The distinguished members of the jury for the 2001 competition were Adelaide Bishop, Nedda Casei, Bruce Donnell, Ernst Ludwig Gausmann and Alfred Hubay. William Hicks was the accompanist.
